Why should you build siding with Grad systems Should specifying materials be about true intention? I have this conversation every single day. The first time I went to the rainforest around Manaus in Brazil I wondered why there were so many clear patches of forest and now working in this industry I know why. #Ipe is still one of the most requested species in residential projects even with increasing pressure from evolving CITES regulations, tighter controls on tropical hardwood sourcing., and the availability of so many other types of equivalent or better wood products. Why? Perhaps because Ipe built a reputation that’s hard to ignore: • Exceptional durability (40–75+ year lifespan in the right conditions)• Extremely high density and hardness• Natural resistance to rot, insects, and fungal decay• Fire performance (often comparable to steel in certain assemblies)• A rich, dark aesthetic that many still associate with “premium” decking But the conversation shouldn’t stop there. Today’s Ipe also comes with real challenges—some too often overlooked: • Increasing supply constraints and regulatory complexity• Environmental concerns• Unstable fire resistance (B, C, not so A anymore – we did testing in the US) • Significant weight: higher structural requirements and installation labor• Difficult machining: higher tool wear, longer install times, increased cost• Requested clearance of up to 18” (no low decks anymore) • Movement and checking if not detailed and installed properly• Limited dimensional stability compared to modified woods• Color inconsistency and natural variability between batches• Maintenance expectations: without regular oiling, weathering can be uneven• Cost volatility driven by availability and import conditions So the question isn’t “Is Ipe good?” Perhaps today the real question should be: Why Ipe, for this specific project? With today’s material innovations—thermally modified wood from Thermory USA Arbor Wood Co. BPWood Ltd., modified wood from Kebony or Accoya® North America, engineered solutions such as MOSO Bamboo or dasso USA —we have access to products that offer: • Real wood from FSC and renewable sources• Greater dimensional stability• Verified sourcing and sustainability• Easier installation and machining• Low maintenance products • Continuous real class A fire resistance without difference between batches• Predictable performance across climates• Great looks with plenty of finishes available • Better price points • Easier and faster availability Choosing ipe is neither right or wrong, it’s a choice and that’s why I explain all products and have real conversations so that my clients make an informed decision with the satisfaction I did everything to make sure of it in full neutrality. Traditional wood, for all its natural beauty and historical significance, faced significant challenges that led to its reputation for being impermanent, vulnerable to decay, and generally “not lasting.” But the wood of today is vastly different from its ancestors. We’re witnessing a revolution where wood is no longer just a natural product; it’s a meticulously engineered material designed to outperform, outlast, and inspire. Warping, excessive maintenance, decay, rot, short life time, or limited applications are not so much of a concern today thanks to modern wood technology and innovations such as thermowood from Arbor Wood Co. or Thermory or BPWood Ltd. Often found on flat or low-slope roofs, they are particularly vulnerable to standing water, which can quickly find its way into the building if not properly waterproofed. Waterproof membranes thus play a crucial role in construction, acting as a vital defense system for buildings and structures against the damaging effects of water. They prevent structural damages, mitigate mold and mildew growth, and protect spaces. So when this space needs to be utilized, it’s important to consider decking systems that preserve the water resistance of the membrane. Traditional decking methods often involve penetrations into the membrane for fastening, creating potential leak points and significantly shortening the membrane’s lifespan. The key is to employ a decking system that is non-penetrating and allows for proper drainage and ventilation. This is where innovative pedestal and joist systems shine. They elevate the deck, ensuring airflow and preventing water accumulation, all without a single fastener through your waterproof layer. Why the Grad Concept USA Decking System is an Excellent Solution: – Non-Penetrating Design– Superior Drainage & Ventilation– Membrane Protection– Durability and Longevity– Enabled Subdeck Access Find out more here When planning your next deck project over a waterproof membrane, prioritizing systems that protect your waterproofing investment is paramount. Resellers Contact us Hamburger Toggle Menu Siding Built with Grad systems What makes it a critical benefit to build siding with Grad systems Our Services Grad rails Sleek and clean layout Air gap and moisture management For durability and protection Beautiful outdoors Perfect results well and fast Vertical siding is in huge trend. On a style point of view it adds dimension and creates an illusion of taller walls to create a more sleek and contemporary look. And on the technical side, just like its horizontal counterpart it also creates perfect rainscreens and because of its vertical linearity rainwater flows down more easily thus making it even more of a winner. The installation of vertical siding means our fastener systems are installed horizontally on the wall and unlike traditional installations: we can go direct on the wall without double furring, then comes the question: what about water? – nor the rails or the clips absorb moisture – the rails are shaped to help prevent a maximum of water retention – the boards do not sit on the rails but on the clips so water can run through the open space that is between the rail and the back of the outer cladding – two rails are never fastened in a continuous line: even if it is not visible from far away there is always a gap between two rails so water would thin out and drop in the cavity left on both sides of each rail – when walls are not straight (everyone knows it does happen) then it often leaves a small gap between the rails and the backing and where shims were added then there is even more room for water to drop down freely In case the recess is deep then building a double furring structure will help bring the rails forward, and nothing prevents you to build double furring if you absolutely want to. Just know that some rails are better suited for this type of application than others. In case of doubts: we are here to help. Up to a 20 year warranty! Woodhaven was a great partner for us. Shared their knowledge and expertise, helped us with detailing and introduced us to the grad rail system. Tough layouts, easier processes What did you find challenging about it? There is a bit of a learning curve to your traditional T&G siding, particularly in the layout process there can be little variation in the clip alignment. Once we had a process down it became less of an issue. Definitely more time spent on the subframe install but something we pick up on when it comes to the siding install which is faster. Accoya: for beauty and strength What did you like the most about it? For this particular project, there was an architectural requirement that the wall and soffit board joints aligned. I think with traditional T&G siding this would have been difficult to achieve, but with the grad rail the board joints and boards are very precise and made the look all come together. Additionally, if there is board that was damaged it makes the removal and replacement of that cost effective and less time consuming than your traditional T&G. /*! elementor – v3.23.0 – 05-08-2024 */ .elementor-widget-image{text-align:center}.elementor-widget-image a{display:inline-block}.elementor-widget-image a img[src$=”.svg”]{width:48px}.elementor-widget-image img{vertical-align:middle;display:inline-block} First time use First feedback For this particular project, there was an architectural requirement that the wall and soffit board joints aligned.
